With approval granted for the phase three of Muirhall Wind Farm in South Lanarkshire, Collett was called on to deliver 18 components for three GE 2.75-120 145-metre wind turbines.
Among the components were the UK’s largest onshore turbine blades, measuring 58.7 metres long. In full load combination, the overall transport length was 63.35 metres.
The journey was from the Port of Grangemouth, where they had arrived by sea, to some 30 miles or so to the south, where the Muirhall extension is being built. Thorough planning showed that the tower sections could move freely along the route but all kinds of work went into preparing the way for the blades – including street furniture removal, relocation of signs and lamp posts, tree pruning and, on certain sections, laying track way.
Muirhall Wind Farm phase 3 extension, also known as Muirhall South, is expected to be operational in March 2016.
