WSP recruits new retail chief

2 Sep 14 Consulting engineer WSP has recruited Simon Harden from Waterman Group to head its activities for customers in the retail sector.

Simon Harden, a chartered structural engineer, will lead a team of more than 70 staff in the UK, from WSP鈥檚 property and transport planning arms.

As PLC director at Waterman, he was responsible for managing a number of major projects both in the UK and overseas, including the Bullring shopping centre in Birmingham (also a WSP project), mixed-use developments in Abu Dhabi and Kazakhstan, and residential developments in Russia. He also oversaw the international expansion of the company, building it up to 550 staff in 15 offices.

WSP鈥檚 experience in the retail sector includes key projects at home and abroad, including Marks & Spencer鈥檚 Learning Stores, Primark Princes Street, Trinity Leeds, Hanam Union Square South Korea , King Abdulla Financial District Saudi Arabia, and the聽 Mall of Egypt, Cairo, which has Africa鈥檚 first indoor ski slope with real snow.

WSP head of building structures Kamran Moazami said: 鈥淥ur retail offering has gone from strength to strength in recent years, off the back of our solid reputation in structural design. Notable projects such as the Mall of Egypt and our ongoing relationship with retail greats such as Marks & Spencer and Primark has positioned us well, and we are now looking to expand this specialism both in the UK and internationally.
