Kirklees police station will be built on the site of the former Dewsbury College on Halifax Road. It will have approximately 10,000 sqm of space including a 30-cell custody suite, property store, atrium, locker room and gym.
The college鈥檚 Oldroyd building, originally built in 1889 and within a local conservation area, will be refurbished to house most of the office space. Willmott Dixon will also build a split level multi-storey car park and separate surface parking. Work on the new headquarters starts this month, with the site to be operational by the end of 2024.
Anthony Dillon, managing director for Willmott Dixon in the north, said: 鈥淚t is vital that officers have the right facilities reflecting modern ways of working, and the very best support they need to serve the people of West Yorkshire..鈥澛
Building police and fire stations has proved rich seam for Willmott Dixon. Often, these contracts are procured through a Scape framework, like this one. In October, the company handed over a 拢48m headquarters for Merseyside Police at Rose Hill in Liverpool. It is currently building a 拢18m custody suite for Bedfordshire Police in Bedford and a 拢20m building to house Humberside Police鈥檚 control centre near Hull.
