Network Rail has awarded the Reading Train Care Depot Implementation Works contract to VolkerFitzpatrick for £36.2m – less than half the budgeted price of £76m.
Construction of train care depot facilities is scheduled to begin on site on 1 January 2012, completing in August 2013.
The new depot is part of the wider Reading station redevelopment to improve the capacity on the Western route. A Costain/Hochtief joit venture was awarded the £80m station contract in June.
As part of the redevelopment works, a new east chord will be built through the existing Reading train care depot, to allow for grade separation of the main lines. To achieve this, the existing train care depot needs to be relocated to the north of the Great Western Main Line, to the west of Reading station.
