Volker Wessels goes top of the league as total contract awards double in value

6 May 14 Volker Wessels has topped the Builders’ Conference BCLive league table for April thanks to several major contracts signed in the rail sector.

Meanwhile, the value of monthly new orders has doubled year on year.

The Merseylink Joint Venture of Kier, FCC and Samsung C&T took second place in April thanks to the tying up of loose ends on the new Mersey Gateway Bridge.

Morgan Sindall was in third place, picking up 21 new contracts, more than any other contractors during the month.

Volker Wessels鈥 new work includes 拢600m Network Rail station refurbishment contracts as part of the CP5 southern multifunctional framework plus an 拢80m contract to build a new depot for Hitachi Rail Europe in Doncaster.

With the total value of new contract awards reaching close to 拢5bn in April, Builders鈥 Conference chief executive Neil Edwards commented that 鈥渋t is becoming increasingly difficult to remain cautious and sceptical鈥.

The 拢4,911.8m of new orders recorded by the Builders鈥 Conference in April 2014 was almost exactly double the 拢2,465.3m signed during April 2013.

In the rolling year to date, there has been 拢39,764.8m of new contracts signed in the 12 months up to 30 April 2014. This is up 64% from the 拢24,188.9m rolling 12-monthly total a year ago.

Over the past 12 months, Carillion has booked more firm orders by value than any other contractor, with 30 contracts totalling 拢1,988.7m. In second place is Balfour Beatty, with 156 contracts worth an aggregate 拢1,917.8m. Kier, Morgan Sindall and BAM are the only other contractors to have bagged more than 拢1bn over the past 12 months.
