Vinci wins £12m Bristol pathology building

11 Nov 13 North Bristol NHS Trust has selected Vinci Construction UK to design and construct a new pathology building at Southmead Hospital in Bristol.

Work on the 拢11.7m contract will begin imminently, with completion set for January 2015.

The project forms one section of a 拢25m investment programme and is part of the trust鈥檚 plan to consolidate its pathology services with Public Health England as part of the creation of Severn Pathology.

The four-storey building will be built on land to the west of the existing phase one pathology unit. A link bridge will then connect the two phases.

Facilities will include cellular pathology laboratories, microbiology laboratories and a neuropathology suite, as well as administration offices and a regional cytology training suite.

North Bristol NHS Trust project manager Brendan Hanrahan said: 鈥淭he creation of the new 5,000m2 pathology phase 2 building will be a significant step forward in the implementation of Severn Pathology, which we鈥檒l manage in collaboration with Public Health England. This along with other key infrastructure investments provides further evidence of the trust鈥檚 commitment to pathology modernisation, which will enable Severn Pathology to rank alongside any pathology service in the country.鈥

As part of the scheme, molecular laboratories will be relocated from the phase one building which will then allow the overall campus regeneration to continue.

Construction director Martin Thomas said: 鈥淭his development will enable Southmead Hospital to be recognised as one of the leading pathology services in the UK. Our goal is to create a high quality facility which will be built to BREEAM Excellent standard.鈥
