The Shieldhall tunnel will be the largest wastewater storage tunnel in Scotland. It is designed to improve water quality and help cope with the risk of flooding in the city and pollution of the River Clyde.
It will run between Queen鈥檚 Park and Craigton industrial estate via Pollok Park and Bellahouston Park.
Overall project cost is approxmately 拢100m. The main construction contract is valued at 拢86m.
Vinci-Costain鈥檚 contract includes the construction of two 15m-diameter shafts, each 20m deep, a 300m-long cut-and-cover trench and a 5km tunnel with an internal diameter of 4.7m. The technique used will be that of a mud pressure type tunnel boring machine, a Vinci area of expertise.
Work starts this month and completion is anticipated in early 2018.
