Representatives from Unibeton discussed future plans at CityBuild Abu Dhabi Awards when they collected the innovation award for the company鈥檚 green and sustainable concrete solutions.

Unibeton鈥檚 current award winning 鈥榞reen concrete鈥 product already reduces CO2 emissions by 75% and is being used on some major developments throughout the UAE, including Abu Dhabi鈥檚 tallest tower, the Landmark Tower.

The company said that during the construction of the capital鈥檚 Sheikh Zayed Bridge, completed last year, Unibeton鈥檚 green concrete product prevented 80,000t of carbon emissions being spewed into the air, which is the equivalent to the carbon offset of 400,000 trees.

The cement manufacturing process is the major contributor of CO2 emissions in the production of concrete. Carbon dioxide emissions are greatly reduced by using cement replacement substitutes such as pulverised fuel ash (PFA) and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS). The biggest reduction can be achieved while completely replacing Portland cement by industrial waste product, said Unibeton.

鈥淯nibeton鈥檚 proactive use of technology to provide sustainable building solutions definitely places them at the forefront of the regional and global construction industry,鈥 said director of Cityscape and CityBuild Abu Dhabi Chris Speller, who handed over the award. 鈥淭hey are well ahead of their time and set a great example for the rest of the industry.鈥
