Tarmac becomes net user of waste

18 Aug 11 Sustainability initiatives at Tarmac have turned it from a company that produces waste into a net user of waste.

Tarmac鈥檚 2010/11 Sustainability Report highlights progress made against its sustainability framework targets over the past year.聽

Since 2004, the quarrying and materials company has reduced specific energy consumption by 15%, cut specific CO2 emissions by 11%, delivered a 92% reduction in waste sent to licensed disposal and is now a net user of waste. It has also achieved a 28% reduction since 2004 in potable water used per unit of concrete and mortar production.

Tarmac has been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard in recognition of its carbon-cutting efforts, and all its products are certified as 鈥榲ery good鈥 against BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products.

Tarmac director of sustainability Dr Martyn Kenny said:聽 鈥淥ur new report highlights the progress that we鈥檙e making against our commitments and demonstrates that sustainability is even more deeply embedded within our business strategy and culture.
