Systra to oversee Cairo metro project

26 Apr 16 Systra has been named as general consultant for the third phase of Cairo metro’s line 3.

The contract involves the review of detailed studies and supervision of construction work. It follows Systra previous work overseeing all design work for line 3. Systra is part of a grouping that includes Egis Rail and two Egyptian consultancy firms, ACE and EHAF. 聽

Systra senior vice president for the Middle East region Mahmoud Dow said: 鈥淭his new contract is a further development in the long history between Systra and the metro of Cairo. Since the drawing up of the Greater Cairo Transport Plan in 1970, Systra has helped in the design of all three lines, representing more than 20 contracts. We are proud to work year after year, using our technical expertise and in-depth knowledge of the local environment to help enhance mobility services for the people of Cairo, a city that is expected to reach 23 million inhabitants by 2022鈥.

The third line of the Cairo metro, which has a total length of 48km, will link the airport with the northern part of the city as far as Rod El-Farad and the southern part as far as the university. It will have 39 stations, 30 of which will be underground. This third phase - 聽15 stations and almost 18km in length - will link the two banks of the Nile and will extend to the west from Attaba, where the line will split in two, serving the north and the south. Most of it will be underground (10km), but a few sections will be above ground.
