The contract for the 15km tunnel comes just a few weeks after Strabag celebrated the breakthrough of a 10km tunnel beneath Niagara Falls in Ontario.
The new contract involves the tunnel, 16 shafts and bio-filters to clean the air and remove odours, as well as the upgrade of a nearby 3km stretch of road. Tunnelling will be performed using four Caterpillar Tunnelling Canada Corporation tunnel boring machines with a diameter of 3.6m, provided by the client.
Strabag CEO Hans Peter Haselsteiner said: 鈥淲e have spent nearly five years working on a water tunnel at Niagara Falls with the world鈥檚 largest hard rock tunnel boring machine. Now, following completion of the tunnelling works, we can turn to new projects and challenges. I am pleased for our employees who have settled into their new lives in Canada and can now remain there. They have done a good job and the administration of York Region is convinced of the quality of their work in Canada.鈥
