Stockport students help Southdale to re-shape town landmark

6 Jan 12 Southdale is helping young people from Stockport to get started in the construction industry.

The teenagers are gaining experience on Southdale鈥檚 project to convert the town鈥檚 Royal Oak Brewery site into 52 apartments.

The young apprentices from Stockport College Ben Mason and Jason Sheldon are gaining valuable experience at the site as part of their BTEC Level 2 in construction and two other students are on a one year placement and working towards a BTEC in civil engineering.

Southdale鈥檚 Warrington-based team is transforming the former brewery from business space to apartments on behalf of Equity Housing Group. The project, which involves part demolition and part refurbishment of the site, is due for completion in late Spring 2012.

Stuart Allison, Southdale鈥檚 North West regional director, said: 鈥淭he Royal Oak Brewery conversion is one of Southdale鈥檚 landmark projects and it is a great opportunity for Jason and Ben to gain experience with us on this development.

鈥淗elping young people get into construction is something all businesses in our sector should make a priority, because there has long been a need to improve the skills and numbers of fresh talent coming into the industry. We need to see more people coming through such routes as BTECs and apprenticeships to ensure that the right people and skills are in place for the future.

鈥淭he fact that we are providing invaluable experience for local people from Stockport to work on a significant project that will help to meet housing demand in their own community is fantastic, because they will be able to look back at the start of their careers with pride and see the difference they can make to their surroundings.鈥
