After more than 20 years at the reins, Andy Metcalfe has set out his retirement plans. He will be succeeded as head of the Gloucester arm of the business by a new regional manager, who will start with the contractor in January 2017 for a transition period.
Steve Speller, who is joint owner alongside Andy Metcalfe, will become sole proprietor of the business while stepping into the role of company chairman. Des O鈥橬eill will continue his role as group managing director.
鈥淚t is with great sadness that we will be saying goodbye to one of the two original founding members of Speller Metcalfe,鈥 said Des O鈥橬eill. 鈥淎ndy is not only part of our foundation, he has successfully negotiated the growth of Speller Metcalfe alongside Steve Speller and our directors from a small local contractor into the national, 拢130m turnover business we are today.鈥
聽Andy Metcalfe said: 鈥淚t鈥檚 a very difficult thing to leave the company both Steve and I started in his garage over 20 years ago. It has been a tremendous privilege to see Speller Metcalfe grow into the industry-leading contractor we are today and I know with the strong leadership and structure we have across the business, the team will continue on their successful journey.鈥
Steve Spellar said: 鈥淲e met working together at another contractor and saw all the things we didn鈥檛 want a company to be. Realising we had the ambition and the complementary skills to make a partnership work, we decided to try it on our own, and we鈥檝e never looked back.
聽鈥淚 will miss Andy dearly, and wish him all the best. I know he will be keeping his ear to the ground and play a supporting role on occasion following his departure, but he also knows that he鈥檚 leaving us in safe hands.鈥
