Solar energy set to extend life of ice hotel

13 Sep 16 A new chiller system powered by solar energy will prevent an Arctic hotel built from ice and snow from melting, enabling it to remain open all year round.

Icehotel was originally built in 1989 and has been recreated each winter in the village of Jukkasj盲rvi, 200km inside the Arctic Circle in Sweden. The enterprise is now being complemented by a permanent year-round hotel.

Twenty suites, an ice bar and a shopping mall are among the facilities at the new Icehotel, which will be a permanent 2,000m虏 structure.

A large chiller system powered by solar energy will keep the hotel rooms well chilled, and thanks to the long daylight hours of the Arctic Circle from May to September, the Icehotel will be able to stay open even in summer in a sustainable way.

Cowi has been commissioned by Icehotel in several disciplines and will be responsible for building and project management, construction and land, water and power.

鈥淲e wanted help with building management and certain construction work,鈥 said Icehotel founder Yngve Bergqvist. 鈥淐owi鈥 local presence was a key factor in our choice of partner.鈥

The new building will be officially opened on 4 November 2016.
