Snickers spotlights construction stereotypes

27 Mar 14 The issue of the construction worker stereotype is on the agenda this week thanks to an advertisement for Snickers confectionery bars.

Male construction workers on a building site in Australia are shown calling out positive messages to female passers-by below. Their shouts include:聽 鈥That colour really works on you鈥, 鈥A woman鈥檚 place is wherever she chooses鈥 and 鈥I appreciate your appearance is just one aspect of who you are鈥.

At the end, a tag line comes up reading: 鈥You鈥檙e not you when you鈥檙e hungry.

The advertisement is proving to be a big hit on Youtube and generating much comment, such as: 鈥淲ell there you have it kids, if you want to be a decent human being stop eating Snickers and stay hungry!鈥

Another commenter says: 鈥淪o the moral of the story is, deprive food and nutrients from construction workers so that they may behave in a way that decent human beings should be expected to.鈥

Related Information

There is some debate about whether the advertisement is showing the men before or after they have eaten their Snickers bars. Are construction workers only well-mannered and respectful people once they have had something to eat?

Or are construction workers in fact perfectly pleasant people until they get the sugary rush of a Snickers bar and then turn into sexist oafs?

However, as the opening line is: 鈥What happens when builders aren鈥檛 themselves?鈥 the implication seems very clear that what we are watching is the behaviour of builders who have not eaten Snickers. Therefore we must conclude that it is Snickers that makes builders obnoxious, although Snickers thinks that this is their natural state.

Watch below, and decide for yourself.
