SNC-Lavalin to replace Florida bridge

12 Jan 23 Canadian group SNC-Lavalin has won a design and engineering contract to replace the Shepard Broad Causeway bridge in south Florida.

The project aims to provide multi-modal safety improvements, increase mobility, improve hurricane evacuation capability and ease daily and seasonal congestion by replacing the existing bascule bridge with a structure that meets current design standards and is consistent with US Coast Guard (USCG) regulations.

SNC-Lavalin will serve as the main consultant on the project, carrying out the feasibility and environmental study, developing concept plan and full design packages and providing construction engineering and inspection services. The team will focus on minimising project delays and ensuring schedule efficiency.

The company鈥檚 president and CEO Ian Edwards commented: 鈥淥ur longstanding expertise in the transportation sector enables us to tailor our capabilities thereby helping our clients develop safer, more reliable, customer focused solutions that solve today鈥檚 problems while also considering future demands鈥.

SNC-Lavalin intends to use the latest technology, such as digital twin 3D modelling to visualise and develop the concept design options.

The Shepard Broad Causeway bridge plays a critical role in facilitating traffic between the beaches and mainland Miami-Dade County over the navigable Intracoastal Waterway.

SNC-Lavalin has already delivered several similar projects in Florida 聽including the I-75 bridge over the Caloosahatchee River, the I-275 Howard Frankland bridge over Tampa Bay, the Cortez bridge over the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway and the I-4/Selmon Expressway Connector interchange.
