Shell Centre plans progress

14 Sep 12 Plans for a £300m redevelopment of the Shell Centre on London’s South Bank will be submitted for local authority approval within the next three months.

The developer is Braeburn Estates, a 50:50 joint venture between Canary Wharf Group and Qatari Diar. Canary Wharf Group will act as construction manager for the project.

The 1.3m sq ft mixed use development on the 5.25 acre Shell Centre site will include two office blocks, three residential blocks, retail space and a new public square.

Squire & Partners has produced the masterplan, supported by Townshend Landscape Architects. The architects now working on the detailed design of individual buildings are: GRID, KPF, Patel Taylor, Squire & Partners and Stanton Williams (Building 5)

Shell鈥檚 global HQ on London鈥檚 South Bank was built in 1961 to accommodate 5,000 employees. At the time, it was the biggest office block in Europe.

The landmark 27-storey tower will be retained as offices by Shell, having already been refurbished. However, the outdated wing buildings are not capable of meeting the oil company's needs for large trading floors. They will therefore be demolished to make way for the new mixed-use scheme.
