Scottish rail electrification work for Carillion

31 Jan 13 Network Rail has awarded Carillion a £40m contract to electrify the Cumbernauld-Glasgow Queen Street line.

More than 50km of railway is to be electrified as part of a wider 拢80m investment in the line.

As well as the main works, Carillion will also be lengthening the Cumbernauld station platforms and constructing a turnback facility at Springburn.

The project marks the first phase of electrification on the Edinburgh-Glasgow improvement programme (EGIP). The scheme will be delivered in time for the Commonwealth Games in 2014.

Network Rail route managing director for Scotland David Simpson said that the contract would be an 鈥渁n opportunity to continue to develop our new alliancing approach to infrastructure projects 鈥 working more closely with contractors, train operators and other stakeholders to deliver in the most efficient and cost-effective way possible for passengers鈥.

The overall 拢650m EGIP project will cut 10 minutes from journey times between Glasgow Queen Street and Edinburgh Waverley and allow longer electric trains to be introduced.
