Record-breaking bridge inaugurated

6 Jan 12 Mexico’s president has inaugurated the Baluarte Bridge, which has taken the record as the highest cable-stayed bridge in the world.

The 1,124m-long bridge crosses a deep ravine in the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains in northern Mexico and has a clearance of 390m below the deck. Its main span is 520m.

President Felipe Calderon made the final concrete pour and spoke at the inauguration ceremony, acknowledging the achievement of the construction teams in building structure. He described the bridge as a symbol of what Mexicans can achieve.

The project cost 聽MXN2bn (拢93m). A consortium formed by Tradeco, Idinsa and Corey and VSL M茅xico carried out the construction.

The Guinness World of Records has acknowledged the bridge鈥檚 record, which was previously held by France's Millau Viaduct with a clearance of 270m.
