Poland gets funding for rail modernisation

25 Apr 16 The European Investment Bank (EIB) is continuing its support of upgrades to Poland’s rail infrastructure with a new loan of €250m (£195m).

The funding will be used by operator PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe to finance improvements along the strategic corridor linking the Baltic Sea with the Ukraine border. The EIB funds will support the modernisation of the 171km section of the railway line between Warsaw and Lublin and the rehabilitation of the Luk贸w鈥揕ublin freight bypass along a 51km stretch.

In addition to reducing travel times for freight and long-distance traffic, the project is designed to have positive impacts on commuter traffic in Warsaw and Lublin. New tracks will be constructed where increased transport capacity.

EIB vice-president L谩szl贸 Baranyay, responsible for the bank鈥檚 operations in Central European countries, said: 鈥淭he EIB loan will help to improve Poland鈥檚 railways along a strategic Trans-European transport corridor with positive consequences for the environment, transport safety, capacity and speed. This will help to improve the quality of life of passengers, particularly people commuting to work in Warsaw and Lublin, as well as modernising the transport links needed to help further Poland鈥檚 economic development.鈥

The EIB has previously provided 15 loans to PLK totalling some 鈧2.3bn.
