Plan agreed for $500m Florida cruise terminal

29 Jun 16 Royal Caribbean Cruises is to build and operate a dramatic new cruise terminal at PortMiami, in the US state of Florida.

Broadway Malyan has been selected as the firm to design the new terminal, after a global competition was held between five of the world鈥檚 leading architectural firms. The 15,800m2 terminal is nicknamed the 鈥楥rown of Miami鈥 because of its distinct shape. 聽

The cruise company has reached an agreement to build the terminal on land leased from the Miami-Dade County County. The new terminal will serve as homeport to Royal Caribbean International ships, including a 5,400-passenger Oasis-class ship. The agreement will come before the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners on 6 July.

鈥淲e are truly excited to be working with Miami-Dade County and PortMiami to create not just another cruise terminal, but a truly iconic building,鈥 said Richard Fain, chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean Cruises. 鈥淭his new terminal is a symbol of our commitment to Miami, the city where our company first started almost 50 years ago. We can鈥檛 wait to bring an Oasis-class ship to PortMiami.鈥

鈥淢iami-Dade County is happy to welcome Royal Caribbean鈥檚 expansion at PortMiami, and all the economic benefits that come along with it,鈥 said Carlos Gimenez, Miami-Dade County mayor. 鈥淭his public-private partnership will have an estimated economic impact of $500 million [拢375m] and generate approximately 4,000 jobs.鈥

Currently, PortMiami welcomes approximately 750,000 Royal Caribbean passengers annually, representing about 15% of its overall passenger traffic. Once the new cruise terminal is completed, it is anticipated that Royal Caribbean will generate at least 1.8 million passengers at PortMiami.
