Osborne lands £31m Whitcomb Street development

1 Jun 17 The Hobhouse estate holding companies have awarded Osborne a £31m contract to build a mixed-use development just off London’s Trafalgar Square.

The development on Whitcomb Street, next to the National Gallery鈥檚 Sainsbury Wing, has been designed by US architect Arquitectonica, in association with Bermondsey's Brisac Gonzalez.

The design includes 20 high-end apartments, 1,100 m2 of offices and 650 m2 of retail space. The redevelopment also foresees the return of the Royal Watercolour Society to its original home.

Osborne鈥檚 contract was agreed through a negotiated second stage tender. Osborne was invited to the project as a result of its delivery of the 拢22m Mercers Yard development in Covent Garden. Deloitte is involved in both projects too.

Following demolition down to ground level, the new structure will be built over existing load bearing listed vaults. Osborne plans to develop the design in BIM 鈥 the existing vaults have been 3D laser scanned and are incorporated into the BIM design.

Osborne has appointed TP Bennett as its architect and novated Thornton Tomasetti on structures and Max Fordham on services.

Osborne Construction director Ron Moir said: 鈥淭here was a strong teamwork ethos and partnering approach with the Hobhouse customer, Alaska Developments and Deloitte to overcome a series of challenging constraints that included confined logistics, occupied properties fronting the internal court, the listed vaults and a complex 3D fa莽ade geometry.鈥
