Ocon completes Nottingham retail scheme

11 Aug 11 Ocon Construction has completed a 61,000 sqft retail scheme as part of a £48 million mixed use development in Nottingham.

Developed by Opal Properties, Midland Way Retail also includes 1,090 student accommodation units across eight buildings, a management suite, a gym and eight light industrial units.

The retail scheme comprises of seven ground floor units (two-conjoined to become one) and anchor tenant Magnet has taken 15,000 sqft for their showroom and store.聽 A former Magnet kitchen store was demolished to make way for part of the site and the new Magnet store sits amongst the industrial units on the scheme. Value supermarket chain, Lidl, has also taken two of the ground floor units which have been joined to make one store. Other pre-let tenants include Greggs, Dominos Pizza, and oriental fast food outlet Wok & Go.

Commenting on the retail element of the scheme, Nick Williamson-Corbett, Ocon鈥檚 business development manager said, 鈥淲e have experienced that food and grocery retail units are becoming more and more popular on student accommodation schemes聽 as they ensure that students have all the amenities they require on their doorstep, hence our growing experience in this sector.

The tenants that are already in place on the ground floor units are exactly what we would expect for a student scheme but the presence of Magnet as an anchor tenant in a prominent part of the development gives the development a much wider appeal as an out of town shopping destination too.鈥
