The biggest project is the 拢330m upgrading of the A5 dual carriageway, which links the northwest of Northern Ireland to the Republic.
A further 拢105m will go on completion of the A8 road scheme from Larne to Belfast and 拢57m is for completion of the A2 Greenisland dualling scheme from Belfast to Carrickfergus.
A total of 拢91.7m is going on three hospitals schemes: phase three of refurbishment at Altnagelvin Hospital (拢28.5m); pushing forward on plans for a new hospital at Omagh (拢25.7m); and delivering phase B of the Ulster Hospital at Dundonald (拢37.5m).
Regional development minister Danny Kennedy said: 鈥淪ubject to the outcome of the public inquiries that were held last summer, construction work may begin on the A8 as early as this spring, with the A5 works starting in early autumn. A procurement competition will be initiated for the A2 Shore Road project, which should see work commencing early in 2013.
鈥淒evelopment work is also continuing on a range of other major projects including A26 Glarryford, A6 Randalstown to Castledawson, A6 Londonderry to Dungiven, the York Street Interchange, A24 Ballynahinch Bypass as well as other non-strategic schemes such as Millennium Way in Lurgan. Delivery of these projects will be determined by the Investment Strategy for Northern Ireland 2011-21, which is currently published for consultation.鈥�
A5 projects
- Two sections of the A5 are proposed: between Londonderry and Strabane (15km) and between Omagh and Ballygawley (22km).
- Both sections of the A5, subject to the outcome of the public inquiry that completed in July 2011, could commence construction in Sept/Oct 2012.
- Anticipated overall cost of both projects is more than 拢300m.
- The appointed contractors are听a joint venture of FP McCann/BAM/Balfour Beatty and Graham Farrans.
听A8 Belfast to Larne
- The A8 project will complete the dualling of the eastern seaboard corridor between Larne and Dublin (14km).
- A public inquiry was held in June2011 and the inspector鈥檚 report is still being considered. Subject to this, work could start on the ground in April/May 2012.
- Anticipated cost is 拢110m-拢120m.
- The appointed contractor is Lagan/Ferrovial/Costain.
A2 Shore Road, Greenisland
- This scheme will dual the 2.5km section of single carriageway on the A2 at Greenisland, between Jordanstown and Seapark.
- Construction could start early in 2013.
- Cost is estimated at 拢50m-拢60m.
- The planning process is completed but no contractor has been appointed yet.
