NCC lands contract for £45.7m Swedish radiotherapy clinic

13 Jun 11 NCC Construction Sweden is to build the Nordic region’s first of a new type of radiotherapy clinic under a SEK470m (£45.7m) contract for Akademiska Hus.

The building in Uppsala, Sweden is designed with features including some 3.5m-thick walls to cater for the clinic鈥檚 use of proton treatment for advanced radiotherapy.

The project is being conducted under a partnering arrangement between NCC and Akademiska Hus. 鈥淭he Skandion Clinic is a major project with a precise schedule, which requires a proactive and intense partnership,鈥 said Akademiska Hus project manager Tomas Nilsson. 鈥淭he partnering project with NCC, where everyone is involved from the start of the process, facilitates the management of the project.鈥

The building will be about 13,500m2 and will include a treatment facility, clinic, 90-room patient hotel and a restaurant.

Instead of traditional radiotherapy using X-ray radiation or electron radiation, treatments at the Skandion Clinic will use protons. 鈥淭he technology and equipment being deployed at the clinic requires advanced construction technology and considerable craftsmanship. Our visualisation program, which features the construction documents in 3D, clearly shows the building鈥檚 design and construction process. It facilitates the collaboration between all parties,鈥 said Johan Wiberg, construction manager in NCC Construction鈥檚 Stockholm/M盲lardalen region.

The project will start this month and is scheduled for completion in May 2014
