Nationwide announces this year’s winners in Sustainable Housing Competition 2011

9 Jan 12 Nationwide Building Society has announced the winners of the third Nationwide Sustainable Housing Competition, in partnership with RIBA Competitions. This year’s theme was “Regeneration” and judges were looking for affordable housing designs that demonstrate the reuse of buildings and materials.

For the first time the competition was open to registered architects as well as architectural students and competitors had the option to base their submissions on a 鈥榬eal鈥 site at Hillington Square in Kings Lynn, Norfolk.

Prizes were awarded by Wayne Hemingway of Hemingway Design at a ceremony held at the RIBA HQ in London on Monday 5 December 2011).聽聽 A prize fund of 拢20,000 was split between the student and professional categories and the winners were:

Professional category:

1st Prize (拢5,000) 聽 聽 聽Pope Priestley Architects

2nd Prize (拢3,000) 聽 聽 聽David Tigg Architects

3rd Prize (拢2,000) 聽 聽 聽The Imaginary Rock Foundation

Lynne Sullivan, Lead RIBA Adviser said 鈥淲e (the judges) were delighted to see entrants tackling both the lifestyle opportunities and the buildings and spaces of an existing estate.聽聽 The quality and diversity of the ideas was inspirational, and the competition points the way to new opportunities for sustainable regeneration in areas where neglect and lack of clear direction is compromising future prospects. 鈥

In sponsoring these annual awards we have seen some innovative designs from both students and professionals under the regeneration theme and the winning design demonstrates a strategy that could be applied to any housing regeneration scheme in bringing a site back to life鈥.
