Multiplex delivers Australia’s largest hotel

24 Jan 17 Sydney has completed a major redevelopment project as part of the rejuvenation of the Darling Harbour area of Sydney, Australia.

The project has added a 25-storey tower including 222 new guest rooms to what was already Australia鈥檚 largest hotel, bringing the total number of rooms to 892.

The project 聽for M&L Hospitality at 161 Sussex Street has refurbished the former Four Points by Sheraton Sydney hotel and rebranded it as the Hyatt Regency Sydney. 聽Work has also included the construction of a new聽 3,667m2 convention centre; and the 25-level tower, which provides 13 new hotel levels聽 and 10 levels of commercial office space.

聽鈥淲e are delighted to deliver this landmark project which will contribute to the revitalisation of聽 Darling Harbour as a vibrant tourism hub,鈥 said David Ghannoum, regional managing director at Multiplex. 鈥淥ur team鈥檚 vast experience stood us in good stead to tackle the challenges involved in聽 building over an operating freeway and in a live hotel environment,鈥 he said.

A significant amount of construction took place over the top of the Western Distributor Freeway, a major feeder road from the Sydney CBD to the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Construction was completed with minimal disruption to the 80,000 vehicles using the聽 Western Distributor daily and the 600-700 guests staying at the hotel each night.聽

The project聽 generated approximately 2,250 jobs during construction and a further 90 hotel jobs are set to聽 be created now it has reached completion.聽 Construction saw some 11,500m3 of concrete poured and 635 tonnes of steel聽 installed to create the building鈥檚 structure, and over 1,388 glass panels installed to form the聽 hotel鈥檚 fa莽ade.
