Five existing centres will be upgraded and three new ones will be built under the contract for Millennium Challenge Account Namibia (MCA-N).
The centres are being developed through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), which is a US Government initiative that works in partnership with the governments of a number of developing nations through agreements such as MCA-N. The centres are to be part of an MCA-N education project supporting a programme to improve Namibia鈥檚 education and training sector. The programme aims to improve the competency and knowledge of young Namibians through new and innovative methods of learning.
Mott MacDonald will design the centres, conduct environmental and social impact assessments as well as supervise construction of the centres. The consultancy will certify that all work on the centres is completed in accordance with quality, time and cost specifications while also checking for compliance with Namibian environmental legislation and social policies, as well as the environmental and social guidelines of the MCC.
鈥淭hese centres will help to provide a high quality learning environment for disadvantaged individuals throughout Namibia,鈥 said Mott MacDonald鈥檚 project director Greig Hamilton. 鈥淲e will specify materials that can be sourced locally in Namibia for use in the design and construction of the centres.鈥
Construction of the development centres is due to be completed late 2012.
