The 鈧�30m to 鈧�40m (拢23m to 拢31m) flood defence scheme is being designed on behalf of Wexford County Council and funded by the Office of Public Works.
The town of Enniscorthy is located on the banks of the River Slaney and has a long history of serious flooding, most recently last year.
The proposed works cover a 3.5km section of the River Slaney. Major elements include the construction of flood defence walls on both banks of the river, river channel widening and deepening, a flow diversion channel, underpinning of existing bridges and riverbed stabilisation. The scope of work also includes the design and construction of a new pedestrian bridge crossing the river in the centre of the town.
Fintan McGivern, Mott MacDonald鈥檚 project director, said: 鈥淭he completion of this scheme will provide the residents and businesses of Enniscorthy with protection against flooding that has caused so much damage and disruption in the past.鈥�
The Enniscorthy flood defence scheme is due to be completed in 2019.
