Melbourne Metro Tunnel set to create 7,000 jobs

25 Jul 17 The premier of the Australian state of Victoria has announced that nearly 7,000 jobs will be created by the Metro Tunnel project.

The 7,000 jobs created by the biggest public transport project in Victorian history include recruitment of 500 apprentices, trainees and engineering cadets working as part of the tunnels and stations package.

Early works on the project are well underway, with major construction on the tunnel and stations expected to start next year.

Premier Daniel Andrews said: 鈥淭he Metro Tunnel is the biggest ever public transport project ever built in Victoria, and it will need a record number of Victorian workers and businesses to get the job done,鈥 said Andrews.

Member for Footscray Marsha Thomson added: 鈥淭he Metro Tunnel will give hundreds of young Victorians and people re-skilling a start in their new career, giving them the skills and experience they need.鈥

More than 88% of the materials used to build the new tunnels and underground stations will be sourced locally, including 93% local steel.

Andrews added that 65% of the project will be delivered by small and medium-sized businesses.

A new precasting factory will be established in Melbourne鈥檚 west; this is seen as providing opportunities for people including ex-automotive workers from Ballarat and Geelong. The factory will produce the thousands of precast concrete segments needed to line the project鈥檚 twin 9km tunnels.

The project will be completed by 2026.
