Plans for a 拢100m redevelopment were rejected in December 2014 in the face of substantial local opposition.

The revised plans still involve a substantial amount of construction, including 140 homes, a 122-bedroom hotel, 262 student flats, a new community centre and a new Baptist church.

However, the tallest buildings are now eight storeys high rather than nine.

According to West Way Community Concern, which campaigned against the redevelopment, Mace鈥檚 consultation to the scaled back plans still generated 20 responses in support but 332 objections.

However Mace development director Huw Griffiths insisted: 鈥淭he West Way Place planning consent is a genuinely community led proposal shaped by聽 an eight month public consultation which included four meetings of a community liaison group, a series of community workshops and a public exhibition. This consultation enabled community views to be fed into the proposals, guiding the plans at every stage of the design process.

鈥樷榃e are particularly pleased that development at West Way Place will be phased so retailers will be able to continue trading throughout the redevelopment.鈥
