L&T Construction wins its largest-ever residential project

30 Mar 17 Larsen & Toubro Construction is to redevelop century-old Mumbai ‘chawls’ – tenements – following the win of its largest residential project to date.

India鈥檚 Maharashtra Housing & Area Development Authority (MHADA) has awarded it a 29bn rupee (拢349m) contract to replace BDD Chawls .

The chawls were built by the British in the 1920s to provide low-cost accommodation for workers.

The work involves the design and construction of twenty residential towers of 23 floors for rehabilitation, four 72-storey high-rise towers for sale and a 21-floor commercial development within a plot area of 16 acres. The project also includes mechanical, electrical and plumbing work as well as infrastructure, landscaping, demolition of existing structures and the logistics involved in the accommodate the current occupants.

聽鈥淭he BDD Chawls are one of Mumbai鈥檚 most enduring features and by winning the mandate to rehabilitate them, we have another huge opportunity to build India鈥檚 maximum city,鈥 said Larsen & Toubro deputy managing director and president SN Subrahmanyan.
