Throughout the day, year five and six children learned about different jobs and local employers in the Shiregreen community who could pave their career paths after school.
Deputy head teacher Jenny Coats said: 鈥淯sually career days are only arranged for secondary school children, but at Beck Primary School we felt it was important to capture our pupil鈥檚 enthusiasm and nurture it.
鈥淎cademic decisions that children make during their school years can have a significant impact in their future. We want to do as much as possible to grow our pupils into ambitious and skilled professionals, so in years to come they have the potential to put something back into their local community.鈥
During the day the children, aged nine to eleven years old, were entertained by Frank, Frank Haslam Milan鈥檚 6ft mascot. They also learnt that a career in a construction firm went far beyond a building site.
Juliet Bennett community liaison manager for FHM said: 鈥淲e have done a lot of work in Shiregreen over the years and several of our apprentices are from the area, so when we were invited to attend Beck Primary School鈥檚 career day we leapt at the chance.
鈥淎s one of the leading construction firms in the region we are always looking to recruit skilled employees. During the day I opened their eyes to the range of job roles we have at FHM such as marketing, sales and surveying 鈥 plus what qualification they will need to pursue a career in one. 聽
鈥淚 was really impressed with the pupils and their thirst for information 鈥 and who knows, one day they could be joining the FHM team.鈥
On the day FHM were joined by other regional firms from the world of retail, banking, medicine and sports. It was the second year that the school arranged a career day and was so successful more are being planned in the future.
The career day took place on Friday 8 July 2011.聽
