Lendlease forms partnership to make buildings healthier for occupants

24 Nov 15 Lendlease has formed a global partnership with Delos to accelerate adoption of a building standard focused exclusively on human health and well-being.

Delos has developed the Well Building Standard, claimed to be the world鈥檚 first building standard focused exclusively on human health and wellness. It has been designed to marry best practices in design and construction with evidence-based medical and scientific research. The aim is to harness the built environment as a vehicle to support health and well-being.

Delos said that the standard is grounded in evidence-based medical research that demonstrates the connection between the buildings where we spend more than 90% of our time and health and wellness impacts on us as occupants. The standard is administered by the International Well Building Institute and third-party certification is provided by Green Business Certification.

鈥淲hat people need from the built environment to support their health and wellness is the same everywhere,鈥 commented Paul Scialla, founder and CEO of Delos. 鈥淲e鈥檙e proud to join with Lendlease to bring human health and wellness-centred innovations to leading markets around the world.鈥 The Delos platform includes programming, consulting, research and an array of products and technologies that research suggests may improve the well-being of occupants.

A key feature of the collaboration will be to jointly champion the internationalisation and implementation of the well-being agenda for buildings and communities. The effort will include identifying pioneering projects in key global markets where Lendlease operates, including Australia, Asia, the United Kingdom and the United States, which will pursue Well certification and provide Well-ready workplaces for tenants.

Lendlease and Delos hope that the projects will drive rapid harmonization of Well with local green building rating systems and building codes, a critical step in the adoption of WELL internationally.

鈥淪upporting the next generation of buildings and places that get it right for people, as well as the environment is very important,鈥 said Geoff Dutaillis, group head of sustainability at Lendlease. 鈥淭he built environment has a critical role to play in helping cities and governments transition towards a low carbon future; however, it鈥檚 the direct impact on human capital and productivity through increased focus on supporting human health and wellbeing which is the untapped potential.鈥

Lendlease will also explore piloting the upcoming Well Community Standard for its key urban regeneration projects to support ongoing research, development and implementation. It will also collaborate with Delos to integrate the Well Building Standard into its workplace strategy and will begin evaluating its own regional offices for health and wellness performance.
