The development is designed to generate 55MW - enough energy to power about 35,000 homes and offset approximately 165,000t of greenhouse gas emissions per year.聽 The Mumbida Wind Farm project will use 22 of GE鈥檚 2.5MW wind turbines, which will be mounted on 85m towers.
It is expected the wind farm will be complete by November 2012.
The project will be delivered by Leighton Contractors and GE through a single engineering, procure and construct contract.
Mark Chilcote, general manager of Leighton Contractors鈥 industrial and energy division said: 鈥淲ind power in Australia is a proven and mature technology that can be readily deployed. This project will assist Western Australia to further utilise this resource to reduce CO2 emissions and contribute to a more environmentally sustainable future.鈥
GE Energy chief executive officer Tim Rourke said that the 2.5 series wind turbine is GE鈥檚 flagship onshore wind technology platform, designed for a high level of reliability and featuring industry-leading grid integration capabilities. 鈥淭he intelligence and reliability of GE鈥檚 wind turbine technology makes it a natural fit with the requirements for long-term renewable energy supply in WA,鈥 he said.
