Leighton team lands $480m project to remove level crossings in Melbourne

24 Jun 15 The government of the Australian state of Victoria has named Leighton Contractors as the preferred contractor for the removal of four level crossings in Melbourne.

Leighton will work with alliance partners Aurecon and Hyder Consulting. The Alliance, which also includes client bodies VicRoads, Public Transport Victoria and Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM), will remove level crossings at Main Road and Furlong Road in St Albans, Blackburn Road in Blackburn and Heatherdale Road in Mitcham.

The package of works has a total value of approximately AU$480m (拢235m). To remove the four level crossings, the project will lower the rail line at each site and construct or upgrade necessary facilities and access.聽

The project is the second in an eight-year programme to remove 50 dangerous level crossings in Melbourne, with the first 20 crossings to be removed over the next four years. As well as improving safety, the removal of level crossings will enable more frequent train services in future.

鈥淭he Victorian Government鈥檚 level crossing removal programme is an example of Australia鈥檚 focus on infrastructure investment,鈥 said Marcelino Fern谩ndez Verdes, CEO of Leighton Contractors鈥 parent company Cimic Group (formerly Leighton Group). Investment like this is creating a pipeline of work suited to the group, he said.
