Laing O’Rourke backtracks on Bison closure

5 Oct 12 Laing O’Rourke has reduced the scope of planned cutbacks at its Bison concrete products subsidiary.

The company has decided not to close the Bison factory in Scotland after all, and there will be fewer job losses than initially envisaged at the main plant in Derbyshire.

A Laing O鈥橰ourke spokesman said: 鈥淚n August this year, Laing O鈥橰ourke tabled proposals to close its Bison facility in Uddingston and to reduce the workforce at the company鈥檚 Swadlincote operation, subject to collective consultation with its workforce.

鈥淭hrough consultation with our workforce and by speaking with our supply chain, we have been able to identify a series of measures to enhance efficiency and create a viable future plan for Bison.

鈥淐onsequently, at Bison Uddingston, rather than closing the facility, the plan is to keep it open but with a reduced workforce. Collective consultation at Uddingston is continuing to agree how many people are required within a reduced workforce.聽

鈥淎t Bison Swadlincote, the initial plan to put 70 people at risk of redundancy has now been revised to 30 jobs at risk. Collective consultation at Swadlincote has now concluded and individual consultations will commence.

鈥淲e are pleased that this alternative proposal can be taken forward and the consultation process to effect these changes will occur quickly, with minimal disruption. Of course, we will continue to provide full support to all employees during this difficult period.鈥
