Lafarge’s Cauldon works helps identify builders for the future

1 Nov 11 Lafarge Cement UK’s Cauldon Works has joined forces with one of its merchant customers, Huws Gray, and a specialist construction college in North Wales to host a week long educational visit to find Britain’s builders of the future.

The manufacturer鈥檚 product experts spent time at Llandrillo College in Rhyl, North Wales, training Building Craft Foundation and other construction-linked students using Lafarge building materials supplied by merchant Huws Gray.

Lafarge Cement then took 40 students to its Cauldon Works in Staffordshire where they were given hands-on, first-hand experience into the process of manufacturing construction materials.

Cauldon Works production manager Mark Jelf explains: 鈥淎s part of our commitment to supporting communities, and also to raising the profile of jobs in the construction industry, we were able to coordinate a complex timetable of product training at the college, followed by first hand experience of the cement-making process here at Cauldon Works. This was an excellent way of identifying, training and enthusing builders of the future.鈥

The programme concluded with a presentation and prize-giving event - attended by Lafarge Cement and Huws Gray representatives - to recognise those students who had shown the greatest potential during the week.

The College鈥檚 Building Craft Foundation course co-ordinator, Mark Parry added: 鈥淲e have been very lucky here at Rhyl College to have the interest and the backing from local supplier Huws Gray and the contacts that they have made for our benefit.

鈥淟afarge is a huge company and we were very excited to have its roadshow here at the college, showing the students different products and keeping them entertained. These types of links with industry are essential although not always easy to organise and we as a college feel very fortunate to have taken part in this experience. A big thank you to all involved.鈥
