The aim is for the rail link to be in operation by 2016, when Brazil will host the Olympics.
The 500km line will link Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. Bidding has already been postponed on two occasions. Splitting the tendering in two is intended by Brazilian transport agency ANTT to help get the project under way quickly. The first phase will include the technology and the second will cover the infrastructure required to suit the chosen technology.
