John Holland lands Tasmanian hospital deal

2 Sep 13 John Holland has been awarded the contract to deliver the AU$365m (£209m) Royal Hobart Hospital redevelopment project in Tasmania, Australia.

John Holland will deliver the project under a managing contractor (MC) relationship model in joint venture with Fairbrother.

The redevelopment of the hospital will be delivered on brownfields sites. The scope of the project includes construction of a new building of two towers and 10 storeys to accommodate operating theatres, women鈥檚 clinics, endoscopy, paediatrics, maternity and mental health functions together with the refurbishment of existing clinical areas and site wide infrastructure upgrades.

Leighton Holdings chief executive officer Hamish Tyrwhitt said the project would greatly enhance health services currently available in Tasmania.

Group managing director, Glenn Palin, said the contract provides the opportunity for John Holland to develop relationships with the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). 鈥淥ur existing relationship with Fairbrother will assist with a smooth transition toward project delivery and the development of a program of works that will minimise disruption to the hospital and accelerate the safe delivery of the project to the Department and people of Tasmania,鈥 he said.

Stage 1 of the MC鈥檚 services is scheduled to begin later this month and construction work of Stage 2 is scheduled for completion in June 2017.
