The striking new steel frame structure occupies an underused area of space between two existing single-storey buildings and provides the popular school with a high specification canteen which has in-built flexibility to allow swift conversion into a large multi-use space.
Known as The Lighthouse - the spacious new canteen features a mezzanine level and full height glazing across two elevations, allowing light to flood into the contemporary styled structure. Designed to be highly sustainable and minimise overall running costs for the school, the building is passively ventilated via a roof mounted windcatcher system, features under floor heating and boasts high performance insulation materials to retain heat.
The project included the replacement of the school鈥檚 existing commercial kitchen with a modern, high capacity facility and ISG Jackson was also tasked with the refurbishment and modernisation of the existing canteen. The flexible nature of the space in the new building is characterised by the specification of wheeled servery counters, which can be securely stowed away when not in use. 聽
Stuart Talbot, divisional director for ISG Jackson Special Projects, commented: 鈥淭he stunning new canteen facility at The Harwich School is an excellent example of maximising underused areas of space to create an inspirational multi-use facility. Combining a raft of sustainable features within a contemporary design, The Lighthouse combines both function and form to create a building that should prove a considerable asset to the school for many years to come.鈥
