ISG commences second phase of Saint Mary’s Hospital upgrade

8 Aug 11 ISG has secured a fast-track £1.3 million project with Central Manchester University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to create a new Andrology department and Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) at the city’s Saint Mary’s Hospital.

The project sees ISG return to the hospital following an earlier 拢2 million phase of work to deliver a new IVF unit at the 100 year old grade II listed building.

Both the Andrology department and SARC will now relocate to two separate wings on the hospital鈥檚 ground and second floor. ISG is tasked with reconfiguring and rationalising space within the building to create high specification clinical accommodation for the two departments. Minor demolition works will focus on the removal of a number of internal walls to create space for specialist equipment, with an associated requirement to take down several chimney stacks at roof level.

The work is being carried out within a busy live environment, with the ground and first floors of the building in full occupation throughout the duration of the project. Due to the protected nature of the structure, ISG is working sensitively and in full collaboration with conservation authorities to ensure the fabric of the building is conserved and restored. The project is scheduled for completion in September 2011

Jim Parker, ISG鈥檚 North West managing director, commented: "This latest project at Saint Mary鈥檚 Hospital represents a highly challenging proposition for our site team from both an operational and conservation perspective. Maintaining continuity of services for the hospital is a mandatory requirement and we have developed a robust phased schedule of works to minimise any potential disruption to staff, patients and visitors.鈥 聽聽
