Implenia to build giant ‘bathtub’

13 Mar 20 An Implenia-led joint venture has won a €63m (£56m) contract to build a German highway junction that includes a groundwater ‘bathtub’ almost 1km in length.

The state of Bavaria鈥檚 road agency Autobahndirektion S眉dbayern has commissioned team of Implenia and Fahrner Bauunternehmung to build the junction connecting the 鈥楤15 neu鈥 federal highway and the A92 motorway near Landshut. The total contract is worth 鈧63m and Implenia鈥檚 share is a gross contract volume of about 鈧52m.

The area where the 鈥楤15 neu鈥 crosses under the A92 lies completely in groundwater, so a special groundwater 鈥榖athtub鈥 needs to be built to protect the entire cloverleaf junction. This bathtub will be about 970m in length, and will be made of around 70,000m3 of reinforced concrete floor plates and 6,400m3 of reinforced concrete walls.

鈥淭his is a very complex project, not least because the entire structure has to withstand very strong lifting forces caused by the high groundwater level,鈥 said Implenia鈥檚 project manager Uwe Seifen. 鈥淚t requires an extremely solidly built heavyweight bathtub. I鈥檓 pleased that we have once again been given an opportunity to demonstrate Implenia鈥檚 specialist expertise in civil engineering and special foundations.鈥

Construction work begins in April 2020 and completion is planned for November 2023. The main concreting work is scheduled to finish in mid-2022.
