The 鈥楥hanging the face鈥 was run by DuPont together with Union of Architects of Russia, YEM, RIBA and Architizer. Three winning proposals for the cinema in one of Moscow鈥檚 best-known areas were selected from 512 entries submitted by 1,002 architects from 62 different countries. The architects were asked to work in a creative way to create a new fa莽ade,聽 incorporating modern architectural solutions in the original, historical built-up area. The only condition set by the organizers was the use at least one DuPont material.
The 鈧10,000 first prize was won by the 鈥楩rozen in time鈥 design by Juan Andres Diaz Parra from Colombia. It uses DuPont鈥檚 Corian. It changes with the season. The fa莽ade elements disperse water that in the summer becomes a cooling mist and in the winter freezes to create a new fa莽ade of ice surrounding the building.
This is the sixth location where DuPont has run a similar competition. 鈥淭he number of projects submitted by the worldwide architectural community in聽 this edition has significantly exceeded the most daring expectations,鈥 said DuPont competition聽 manager Wlodek Sobon. We will evaluate with the聽 highest care all the ideas coming from the architects who attended the competition and we aim聽 at turning one of these projects into reality."
The 鈧5,000 second prize went to the 鈥楳oving light palace鈥 by Germany鈥檚 Adrian Reinbroth, Franziska Boettcher and Jenny Grossman. Their design uses DuPont SentryGlas interlayers for structural laminated glass and DuPont Teflon for surface protection.
鈥楾he Pushkinsky jewel鈥 design by Joseph Sung from South Korea took the 鈧3,000 third prize. It used DuPont SentryGlas interlayers for structural laminated glass.
