Hooley Cutting enabling works

24 Oct 11 An important enabling works contract has been awarded by Network Rail to BAM Nuttall working in collaboration with BAM Ritchies.

The project focuses on Hooley Cutting - a deep chalk cutting on the main London-Brighton line that has a long history of stability issues.

Network Rail plans to undertake major stabilisation works and this enabling works contract is to prepare for the main works. The preparatory works are within the steep 30m deep chalk cutting containing the two slow lines of the heavily trafficked London-Brighton route.

The works will take place over a nine-day period over Christmas 2011. Once the advance work has been completed, it will allow the majority of the main work to be carried out without significant railway possessions being required and this will keep disruption to train services on this strategically important line to a minimum.

The work scope includes approximately 1000 metres of temporary catch fencing and 260 linear metres of scaffold with associated piled foundations.

In addition, upgrade works will be carried out at Road Rail Vehicle (RRV) access points at the near-by Merstham mud-flats to provide access to the railway for the main work.
