The task for competitors was to create a comprehensive idea design for the 23ha shore zone of the South Harbour. The proposals show many different ways in which the centre and shore areas of Finland's capital can be designed.
The South Harbour ideas competition was organised as part of Helsinki as World Design Capital programme and was open to everyone. The results of the competition will be presented in spring 2012. In all €165,000 (£138,000) will be distributed as prizes.
The organisers said that a single work is not expected to solve all the sub-areas of the challenging design task. Instead, usable ideas are sought from the works for different purposes. In online discussions, the residents are being encouraged to evaluate the functionality of the ideas and how the competitors have succeeded in their task.
