Hanson scoops four BDA awards

8 Nov 10 Hanson UK has claimed top honours in four categories at the 2010 Brick Development Association awards, including ‘best commercial building’ for its development at a former brickworks in Bedfordshire.

The 63,500 square foot commercial centre at Stewartby was planned, designed and built by the company using a wide range of its products and received a BREEAM excellent rating and a robust B-rating for its Energy Performance Certificate (EPC).

The judges said it was: 鈥淎n impressive building that not only displays different ways of exploiting brick and brickwork but also contains a number of cutting edge environmental strategies that contribute to the BREEAM excellent rating it received.鈥

It is the second trophy the project has received this year, having picked up the 2010 British Precast Concrete Federation鈥檚 鈥榖est project鈥 award in the summer.

Hanson shared the award for 鈥榖est education building鈥 with Coleford Brick & Tile for聽 Sevenoaks School Performing Arts Centre, as well as picking up the award for 鈥2010 innovative use of brick and clay products鈥 for the use of its Red Bank Lockclad system at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. In addition, the company鈥檚 bricklaying arm Irvine Whitlock was awarded 鈥2010 specialist brickwork contractor of the year.鈥

The BDA awards recognise excellence in design and construction using bricks and are one of the longest established and most widely respected design awards in the UK.
