Government construction chief calls on industry to embrace new ways of working

24 Oct 11 Paul Morrell, the Government’s Chief Construction Advisor has told the construction industry that it is ‘no time to put its head under the duvet’ and that it must forge ahead with radical new ways of working.

Speaking at a lively Question Time-style event hosted by the West Midlands Centre for Constructing Excellence (WMCCE), he called on attending senior decision-makers to tackle fragmented supply chains, unlock innovation by overcoming old hierarchical ways of working, recognise the value in good design, promote SMEs and make the transition to new systems such as Building Information Modelling (BIM).

In a bullish presentation, he said that public sector construction clients across central and local Government also needed to become more informed and have a greater understanding of how much a building can cost to build. He added that it was no time for procurement methods where all too often companies and clients on construction projects hope everything will turn out alright.

Morrell outlined his thoughts on BIM, the use of 3D modelling to help planning, sequencing and detecting clashes on construction projects.聽 He also shared his beliefs on the fact that true value and construction savings would always be found on the drawing board and not on building sites.聽 BIM technology he stated has the potential to drive collaboration between partners, and connect the design and construction with long-term asset management of buildings.

Phil Wilson, executive director at WMCCE said: 鈥淧aul Morrell tackled the burning national issues that are affecting our industry head on. This was an important and insightful view into Westminster鈥檚 thinking on construction and it is now crucial that our companies and public sector clients can embrace change, collaborate more effectively and understand how technology can radically transform the way we build.鈥
