The council鈥檚 planning committee voted last night to grant planning permission for a new station at Twickenham, subject to the completion of a Section 106 agreement and no adverse direction from the Greater London Authority.
Solum Regeneration, the joint venture between Network Rail and Kier Property that is promoting the scheme, welcomed the decision.聽
The scheme will provide a new gateway to the town centre, with 115 new homes plus shops and restaurants built around a new public plaza. The development will provide a new station, with a larger ticket office, new lifts and stairs and new toilets.
The aim is to have the project completed before the 2015 Rugby World Cup at the nearby Twickenham stadium.
Solum Regeneration development manager John Robinson said: 鈥淲e are delighted with the decision of Richmond Council and would like to thank all those people that have supported our plans.聽 We look forward to continuing to work with the council and the wider Twickenham community as we progress the project over the coming months and to starting construction in 2012.鈥
Twickenham will be Solum Regeneration鈥檚 third project. The joint venture was established to regenerate railway stations in the southeast of England and work is already underway at Epsom and Walthamstow.
