Funding secured for Bergen airport expansion

27 Oct 15 Norwegian airport operator Avinor has received a €200m (£144m) long-term loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB) for the expansion and upgrade of Bergen airport.

The project involves construction of a third terminal and associated facilities including a light rail station to improve public transport links with the city centre. The airport, which is located 19km south of Bergen city centre, currently handles more than six million passengers each year and is the second busiest in Norway. Existing facilities are operating above capacity and there is congestion at peak periods.

The EIB said that it places great emphasis on the environmental aspects of the projects it finances. It highlighted that use of innovative technologies for the construction of the new terminal will help to reduce energy consumption by 30% and that the light rail station will encourage a modal shift to public transport.

Jan Vapaavuori, EIB vice-president with responsibility for lending in Norway, said: 鈥淭he EIB has made supporting strategic transport infrastructure one of its priorities. Bergen airport is the key international gateway in western Norway and part of the extended trans-European transport network (TEN-T). We are therefore pleased to support Avinor鈥檚 investment, as it will enhance capacity and improve the operational efficiency of Norway鈥檚 second busiest airport whilst also increasing its environmental performance.鈥
